Evaluation of the main achievements of Cohesion Policy programmes and projects over the longer term (case study North Rhine-Westphalia)

IfS analysed the effects of ERDF funding in North Rhine-Westphalia since 1988 as one of 15 case studies in the EU

The evaluation of the main achievements of Cohesion Policy programmes and projects over the longer term was conducted by an international project team, coordinated by the European Policies Research Centre (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow) and the London School of Economics. IfS prepared the case study of North Rhine-Westphalia. This included

  • Document analyes (especially programme descriptions, reports, evaluations)
  • Interpretation of funding data
  • Interviews
  • Workshops

The case study shows how ERDF funding helped structural changes in North Rhine-Westphalia and especially the Ruhr area since 1988. It also becomes clear that regional policy was adjusted. All case studies and the final report can be downloaded on the website of DG Regio.
